“three on the bund, winner of the 2006 design for asia award, exemplifies how adaptive re-use of a historic building averted demolition and how new interior design created an international success. the bund, once the most famous street in asia, was the center for china trade. no. 3, built in 1916 by the union assurance company, was the first structural steel building in china. through this project, the beaux arts façade was meticulously restored, the structure reinforced, and new building systems installed. the non-historic interiors were gutted and transformed into an arts and retail center, with three levels of fashion retail and art galleries, and four levels of upscale restaurants and a jazz club, including restaurants designed by mga for celebrity chefs david laris and jean-georges vongerichten. the rooftop cupola was renovated for two levels of private dining. a new grand stair and the expansion of two light wells into full-height atriums unite the interiors by allowing views of activities on all levels.” – mga
